Coaching, Community, and Care: Supporting Coaches to Make a Difference

As President of UK ICF, I am often reminded of the deep impact our work as coaches has on the world. Yes, coaching helps people make decisions or solve problems. And it does much more than that. It influences how they think, relate to others, and lead within their organisations. These shifts ripple outward—affecting teams, families, and communities.

When people grow, they become better equipped to navigate complexity, make thoughtful choices, and inspire those around them. This has a systemic impact. Coaching helps create leaders who are not just effective at work but also better parents, partners, and friends. The organisations they lead are stronger, more innovative, and better able to address the challenges of a changing world.

At UK ICF, we focus on supporting our members in this important work. Our local groups, special interest communities, supervision groups, and credentialing pathways create spaces for coaches to connect, develop their skills, and build resilience. These groups are essential for learning and growth. They help us stay grounded and remind us why we chose this profession—to make a positive difference. This energy was palpable at our group leader meet up earlier this week. 

Sometimes, though, the challenges are not just about coaching. They are about the business of coaching. Recently, we learned that some of our members had been targeted by predatory sales tactics. They were pressured into signing costly contracts under high-pressure conditions. These situations can be financially devastating and emotionally draining.

We must address these challenges together as a community. It’s important for coaches to stay vigilant:

• Be cautious of unsolicited offers.
• Don’t sign contracts without reviewing them carefully.
• Ask clear questions about value and return on investment before committing.

By sharing these stories, we hope to protect others from similar experiences. As a profession, we need to support each other in all aspects of our work – coaching skills, ethical practice, and the realities of running a business.

The work we do as coaches matters. It shapes leaders, strengthens organisations, and creates lasting change. By fostering a strong, connected coaching community, we amplify the positive impact we can have—on individuals, on organisations, and on the wider world.
