My coaching journey
Like many things in my career, I fell into coaching by accident after a half-day module on a management training course covered active listening. It quickly transformed from an interest to a choice, and then to a real vision for the future. I practised my newly obtained coaching skills on the teams I managed and saw the impact. I was hooked.
It was only after I left my previous employer—around 18 months ago—that I finally joined the ICF and went for my ACC credential. Since I was setting up my own coaching business, I knew those simple steps would add legitimacy when approaching possible clients.
The other aspect of joining that really spoke to me was the commitment to continued education and self-awareness. It’s such a key part of being a coach, and having it embedded into the ICF approach works for me.
How have ICF and UK Chapter membership helped me?
Since joining the ICF, I’ve been on various courses and attended some one-off training and educational sessions, and it never fails to impress me. The wealth of knowledge out there and the support I have received has been truly invaluable.
While I am going for my PCC at the moment, I am already way ahead when it comes to renewing my ACC. The credentialing process page is clear enough that I can see exactly what I need to focus on, and the education section has everything I need to make sure I can hit those points. Plus, with the credentialing drop-in sessions, it’s easy to get answers to anything that remains slightly mysterious.
Along with the local groups and being able to connect with other coaches around the globe, I have been lucky enough to be placed on volunteer programmes via ICF Ignite. With this, I was able to work with clients from sectors I would not normally work with and gain real insights into different leadership styles.
The difference UK Chapter membership has made
The real difference my membership has made is the legitimacy it adds when I approach clients or talk to people about my work. Being part of the largest and most recognised global coaching institute brings weight to the conversation. It’s a short-cut to being taken seriously.
But it’s so much more than that. It’s being part of a community of like-minded people. It’s a one-stop shop for education and continued growth. It’s a chance to connect with coachees you might not normally meet to help shift your perspectives and challenge how you coach.
(NB: All coaches are great no matter which club they belong to, but I think we can agree ours is the best!)
Advice to other members
Do it.
Get stuck in. Reach out to someone on the team and find out how you can help them or the ICF in general. Everyone is so incredibly generous with their time; you’ll be welcomed in with open arms.
